Animal CuriosityI lay awake at night, sodden with wonder and the curiosity that has not yet killed my catty instincts. I wonder at my poetry and the thought it may evoke in heads of strangers that sleep heavy after digesting it.Animal Curiosity
I wonder whether any word I place in any particular sentence, with any particular line break, will leap from a page and land gracefully on all four paws, scratching its identity, its emblem, on their retinas.
Any words subsequently falling from my wrists are tried and tested, then dissolved in coffee the morning after; redigested. Each word is crumbled down to

LivelihoodLying in bed, I think of my tombstone, and the rivulets that will carry droplets of rain to the grass my body will make greener; my life in its entirety.Livelihood
As the years grow from that greener grass, the empty valley words will shallow with dirt and mould; each clump of moss marking a ring on a tree ungrowing.
I can recite the likely locations, but the words I cannot fathom. "Devoted wife and mother" or "dedicated humanitarian". Perhaps, and much more likely,
just a simple date, marking a means to an end.

AdmissionRain falls often over these dark fields. The smoke that escapes between the crooked teeth of the sodden farmers is stripped in the downpours.Admission
Half-heard phone calls are answered with heavy breath; strangled with a thick clunk. Old flames are scooped and the innocent flung with swan wings, stolen. Skins carved and hanging in
red hoods, read hunted love in tatters. And half-dead poets say these words. They say these words as though they know the slow struggles behind mothers and widows, grim and seduced by the lone reaper; childless.

Soap BubblesIt's in the too hot bath I think about the bubbles and what we don't know is inside them.Soap Bubbles
They don't float any particular route to the rapid guttering of their oily skins, their remains flung to the steam.
It's with that faultless fling of a bubble's bodily debris that I feel the air once harnessed within it hit my chest like a brick, leaving a ghostly hole in the smog
that's frying my skin a sunny side up.
